An Angel in Demon's clothing

You all have obviously heard of Tom Cruise, right ? Johnny Depp ? Justin Bieber (ugh) ?
Sure. Big names. Famous guys. Superstars.
Now, tell me, who is Ron Perlman ?
No idea. Don't worry, I'll give you a photograph too.

Still, no idea, right ?
If I asked you to name even one movie or Tv show where you've seen him, you wouldn't be able to. Probably seen him somewhere but definitely didn't even know his name till just now. Well, if for nothing else, remember him from now onwards for this one sweet act of his.

There is an organization in USA called the Make-A-Wish foundation which receives thousands of letters from dying and suffering kids about what they would like to do, given the chance. But when one young cancer patient requested to meet his idol, the foundation found themselves in a spot of bother.

You see, the problem was that the kid didn't want to meet an actor or a sportsman or musician. He wanted to meet a specific superhero from his comics and movie world. As if that wasn't enough, this wasn't just your normal everyday superhero either. There was neither a simple mask nor a fun suit to wear. It wasn't as though the kid wanted Batman or Superman who just needed a costume and hairgel.
This boy wanted the 'demon with a heart of gold'.
Hell-boy.

To don the guise of Hellboy during the movies in 2004 and '08, the actor Ron Perlman had to sit through four gruelling hours of make-up every day, going through layers of latex and paint,  just to become ol' Big Red. It was an extremely tiring process during the making of the movies and so the foundation wasn't too optimistic when sending a request to the actor.

To their delight however, the 62 year old actor with a heart of gold gladly obliged and went through the process again for the first time in four years before heading over to surprise young Zachary and give him a moment the kid had only dreamed of till then - a real life meeting with his comic book hero.

The kid's day would get better with 'HellBoy' ordering burgers, fries and milkshakes for the kid and his equally bewildered parents ( I wonder how they must have felt seeing a demon walking into the hospital and asking for their kid ? ) before getting him dressed up as a mini-version of HellBoy ( what does that make him actually - HellBaby ? ) and spending the rest of the day with him.

This gesture reminded me of one of the quotes from the original 2004 movie -
“What makes a man a man? A friend of mine once wondered. Is it his origins? The way he comes to life?  I don't think so. It's the choices he makes. Not how he starts things, but how he decides to end them.”

You may not be a superstar to the Bieber-and-Gaga adoring crowd... you maybe just a demon on the big screen, but Ron -  this grand gesture gets you my respect.
Oh, and the Dalai Lama's too, apparently.

    1. Exactly.. the Tv sitcom crowd would still know him from Sons of Anarchy, but he's been around a lot longer than that.. and even if you've seen Hellboy, you still havent seen this guy's face there or known who he was.

    1. Seriously.. I have a lot of respect, because he knows the kid wont know who the person under the paint n latex is - the kid will see hellboy, not Ron Perlman. And still the guy did it..
